The Chevy Silverado 1500, a pickup renowned for its capacity for hard work, carries its hereditary excellence and integral part of its family DNA across generations. Known for its versatility on ranches, at construction sites, and for hauling everything from boats to dreams to lake houses, this full-size pickup truck from

Chevy continues to impress in its current production. Skillfully handles both work and playtime, offering a wide range of powertrain options including a turbo four-cylinder, two V-8s, and a Duramax diesel.

The larger gas V-8 is a staple, noted as one of the smoothest in its class, yet the ride can be rough at times. Inside, the truck boasts a massive touchscreen but falls short in pouring on the luxury like the Ram 1500. It boasts tons of towing capacity, surpassing both the Ram 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. For mud lovers, the jacked-up Silverado 1500 ZR2 (reviewed separately) is a thrill, but it doesn’t venture as far back in the woods or soar as high in the air as more extreme off-roaders like the Ram TRX and Ford F-150 Raptor.

Where This Vehicle Ranks

In the competitive arena of full-size pickup trucks, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 claims a commendable spot. Ranking at number 6, it stands strong amidst fierce competitors. Ahead of it, at numbers 1 and 2, are the formidable 2024 RAM 1500 and its more robust sibling, the 2024 RAM 1500 TRX. The 2024 FORD F-150 and its more rugged version, the 2024 FORD F-150 RAPTOR, secure the 3rd and 4th places, respectively. The 2024 GMC SIERRA 1500 nestles at the 5th position, slightly edging out the Silverado. Following the Silverado, the more adventurous 2024 CHEVROLET SILVERADO ZR2 takes the 7th spot, while the 2024 TOYOTA TUNDRA HYBRID and its standard version, the 2024 TOYOTA TUNDRA, occupy the 8th and 9th places. Finally, the list concludes with the 2024 NISSAN TITAN at number 10. This lineup, marked by the Chevron Down Icon, showcases the diverse and competitive nature of the current pickup truck market.

What’s New for 2024?

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 brings exciting updates. Chevy introduces new features enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.

  • Color Options: Two metallic paint options, Lakeshore Blue and Slate Gray, add more style to the Silverados.
  • Enhanced Performance: The 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 now includes an active exhaust, producing an angrier sound in sport mode.
  • Midnight Edition: Now available on the High Country trim, adding a unique flair.
  • Blackout Package: An appearance package for the Custom, Custom Trail Boss, RST, and LT Trail Boss models.
  • Tech Upgrades: OnStar, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are now standard across all models, including the base Work Truck.
  • Engine Renaming: The 310-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder is rebranded as TurboMax, signifying its robust capabilities.

Which One to Buy

When considering the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the LT model emerges as a compelling choice. It strikes a balance with its fancier interior, making it stand out from the more utilitarian base-level Work Truck and Custom trims. These latter options are well-suited for tradespeople or those on a tighter budget. For optimal utility, pairing the LT model with a crew cab and standard-length bed maximizes both cargo and passenger space. In terms of power, the 5.3-liter V-8 is preferable over the optional diesel engine, as it’s not only cheaper but also quicker. Additionally, unlike the standard turbo-four, the V-8 allows for selecting the Z71 Off-Road package, which includes upgraded hardware for easier and more fun adventures in the dirt and mud.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is engineered for both power and versatility, offering a dynamic range of engines and powertrains for every job or adventure.

Engine Options:

Turbocharged Four-Cylinder & V-8s: The lineup includes a turbocharged four-cylinder, a pair of V-8s, and a 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-six.

The Powerhouse – 6.2-Liter V-8: This engine boasts 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, making it the quickest, reaching 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds.

5.3-Liter V-8: The smaller 355-hp 5.3-liter engine is impressive, requiring only 6.1 seconds for 0-60 mph.

Duramax Diesel: The diesel-powered Silverado, with 305-hp and 495 pound-feet of torque, offers smooth and quiet operation, though it has the slowest acceleration.

Transmission and Performance:

Agile Handling: Regardless of the engine choice, every Silverado 1500 driven feels smaller than its actual size, providing agile handling. The brake pedal feedback is firm and reassuring.

Trail Boss – Off-Road Capability: The Trail Boss model, equipped with a 2.0-inch lift, gnarly tires, and off-road upgrades, is ideal for tackling less-traveled paths.

ZR2 – The Ultimate Off-Roader: The new ZR2 variant emerges as the most serious off-roader, enhancing the Silverado’s capability in rugged terrains.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 stands out as a capable hauler with a max towing capacity of 13,300 pounds, surpassing the Ram 1500 by 550 pounds but slightly trailing the F-150 by 700 pounds. This top tow rating is achieved with the 6.2-liter V-8, while the 5.3-liter version can still competently handle up to 11,500 pounds. For those opting for models with the turbocharged four-cylinder, expect a towing capacity of up to 9500 pounds. The Silverado’s powertrains also contribute to a robust payload range, spanning from 1870 to 2280 pounds, making it a versatile choice for various hauling needs

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

While the Silverado 1500 may not be a top choice to save money at the fuel pump, it offers a range of powertrain options with varying efficiency. The optional diesel is the most economical, boasting EPA estimates of 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

However, with all-wheel drive, its highway rating drops to 26 mpg, a figure we matched on our 75-mph fuel-economy route. The gas-fed turbo-four, also with all-wheel drive, is rated at 20 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

Surprisingly, the thriftiest 5.3-liter V-8 powertrain outperforms even the smallest engine in real-world conditions, achieving 21 mpg compared to the turbo-four’s 18 mpg. The 6.2-liter V-8 delivers city/highway estimates of 16/21 mpg, and in our real-world highway test, it was impressively easy on fuel, delivering 19 mpg.

This shows that for those prioritizing fuel economy, considering different powertrain options is essential.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers a versatile interior, blending practicality and luxury, from the stripped-down Work Truck model to the decked-out High Country.

Cabin Features:

Base Models: Offering essentials with manually adjustable front seats, manual locks, windows, and vinyl seats.

LT Trim: A significantly snazzier cabin with a handsome dashboard design, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a huge center touchscreen.

Luxury Upgrades:

  1. High Country: Pretty interior with leather upholstery and open-pore wood trim, enhancing the luxury feel.
  2. Comfort Considerations: The crew cab has an enormous rear seat with generous headroom, though the cushions might be uncomfortable for some.

Practicality and Storage:

  1. Storage Solutions: Clever storage cubbies are spread throughout the cabin, making it a practical hauler.
  2. Cargo Innovations: While lacking a carbon-fiber-reinforced cargo bed like the half-ton Sierra, it now includes a multifunction tailgate, Multi-Flex, and offers a range of bed lengths to satisfy traditionalists.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is equipped with a state-of-the-art touchscreen infotainment system that effortlessly supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a mobile hotspot. This system is designed for painless interaction, facilitated by physical knobs and buttons that make interacting with the system intuitive. We appreciated the screen’s prompt responses to touch inputs, ensuring a smooth user experience. From the LT trim and up, the Silverado boasts a horizontal 13.4-inch touchscreen with enhanced features. These include a Google-powered voice assistant, wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the available Amazon Alexa integration, all contributing to a connected and seamless driving experience.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 prioritizes safety, boasting an Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA and packed with advanced driver-assistance technology.

Core Safety Technologies:

  • Driver-Assistance: The Silverado includes a comprehensive list of standard safety features like forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
  • Lane Assistance: Ensuring road safety, it offers lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist as standard.

Advanced Assistance and Ratings:

  • Towing Safety: Equipped with specialized towing assists to make pulling and hooking up a trailer more manageable.
  • High Country Advancements: The top-tier High Country model features GM’s Super Cruise, a remarkable hands-free-driving technology that operates even while towing.
  • Safety Ratings: For detailed crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chevy ensures that each half-ton Silverado comes with a competitive warranty. While it doesn’t match the more lengthy powertrain coverage of the Nissan Titan, every Silverado 1500 owner benefits from the added value of one complimentary scheduled maintenance visit. This commitment to customer care demonstrates Chevy’s dedication to reliability and service quality for its flagship truck.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
